I definitely know I want to go into the dental field but I don't know If I want to do assisting or hygiene.
Hygiene: 2-3 years of school and makes WAY more money. It's repetitive, you do the same thing everyday.
Assisting: 1 year of school, makes good money, but WAY less than hygiene. It's always something different.
Here is my predicament. I like the amount of money hygienist make and I kind of like that its the same thing. Even though its a little boring, I like having one on one time with the patient where I am the "doctor". I can talk to them and get to know them. It's more enjoyable and relaxed.
Then on the other hand, I have assisting. It's always something different, which keeps it interesting. But I feel like I would be in the way of the doctor, even though that's my job...
And the pay difference is extremely crazy!! So that plays a part too...
I registered for classes for this fall. I'm taking CEM 090 and COM 101. These are prerequisites to get into the dental hygiene program at U of M. Next semester I will be taking Sociology and Biology, they are the last two prerequisites I need. I figure that I will cover my bases. If I want to go towards hygiene, my prerequisites are already done. If I want to go towards assisting, I boosted my GPA to get into the program.
Good thing I have till May-June 2014 to figure it out.
Here are some pics of my experience!!
This was the set up for putting a permanent crown on a guys root canal.
